Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and lies about 343 km from Delhi at 2,213 metres above sea level. Before it was Shimladiscovered by the British in 1819, Shimla was a small village belonging to the Nepalese kingdom. Shimla was declared the summer capital of India in 1864. After India gained independence, Shimla was the capital of Punjab till 1966 after which it came under Himachal Pradesh. Summers in Shimla are quit pleasant with the maximum temperature rarely crossing 25°C. Winters are cold with a heavy snowfall.

Tourist Attractions in Shimla
This beautiful town sprawled amidst the pine-clad hills presents glimpses of fading colonial allure. The buildings, the Mall, the picnic spots are places that are commonly visited. A visit to the Mall brings one to the centre of activity. Some major attractions around here are Jakhoo Hill, Glen, Sankat Mochan, Summer Hill, Chadwick Falls, Prospect Hill, Taradevi Temple, Institute of Advance Studies and Himachal State Museum.

MALL - The Mall, running along the Ridge, is the main shopping centre of Shimla. Filled with shops and restaurants, the Mall is always crowded with tourists. The Gaiety Theatre, a reproduction of an old British theatre, is the centre of cultural activities. The Ridge presents an excellent view of the mountain ranges. The Mall merges with the Ridge at Scandal Point where a statue of the renowned nationalist leader, Lala Lajpat Rai has been erected.

- About 2.5 km from Shimla lies the Jahkoo hill at a height of 2455 metres. The highest peak in Shimla offers a complete arial view of the town. The Jakhoo temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, is also situated here.

- The Glen forests lie at a distance of around 4 km from the Ridge at a height of 1830 metres. An ice-cold stream flowing through the forest makes it a fascinating picnic spot.

SUMMER HILL - About 7 km from Shimla at a height of 1983 metres, is the Summer Hill. This picturesque spot lies along the Shimla-Kalka railway line. The place is associated with Mahatma Gandhi for he put up at the Georgian House of Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur during his visit to Shimla. The Himachal Pradesh University is also situated here.

- One can reach this 67-metre-high falls from Summer Hill. The falls is surrounded by thick forests and is about 7 km from the city at a height of 1586 metres.

- An ideal picnic spot, the Prospect Hill offers an excellent view of the surrounding country. It is a 15-minute climb from Boileauganj and is located about 5 km west of Shimla.

SANKAT MOCHANINSTITUTE OF ADVANCE STUDIES - About 4 kilometres from Shimla is the Indian Institute of Advance Studies. This was formerly the Vice-regal Lodge. Besides the magnificent English renaissance structures, the lawns and woodlands of the institute are other sources of attractions. One has to buy a ticket to enter the place.

- Sankat Mochan has a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman on the road to Chandigarh, about 7 km from Shimla. One can also get a fine view of Shimla from here.

- Dedicated to Tara Devi, the temple about 11 km from Shimla on the Shimla-Kalka road. This holy place is also accessible by rail.

HIMACHAL STATE MUSEUM - The state museum is about 3 km from the city centre. It has a good collection of statues, miniatures, photos, coins, and other items from around Himachal Pradesh.
