Chardham Yatra

Ancient Hindu reformer Adi Shankaracharya coined the word "Char Dham", meaning the four abodes of God. He did this in an Chardham Yatraattempt to revive the Hindu religion and unify people across the country during the 8th century.

A Char Dham yatra refers to the trip of the Himalayan region of Garhwal (Uttrakhand), consisting of various places, like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. It is a common Hindu belief that Adi Shankaracharya attained freedom from incarnation here in the lap of the Himalayas. Hence, these places are considered to be the most sacred by Hindu religion and every Hindu should make it a point to take a Char Dham trip, at least once in their lifetime.

According to Hindu religion, Yamunotri and Gangotri represent goddess of Shakti, Kedarnath represent lord Shiva and Badrinath represents Lord Vaishnava. Therefore, devotees visit these places in the same chronological order.
Today, this Himalayan region is visited by thousands of Hindu devotees, who travel from every corner of the world during the annual pilgrim season. This season begins from the month of April and lasts until the celebration of the festival of lights; Diwali held in the month of October/November.
